Redmond traffic safety at a glance
Redmond adopted its Safer Streets Action Plan in 2025 to reduce serious crashes. A few of its findings, based on 2018 to 2022 crash data for city roads:
| Finding | Detail |
|---|---|
| People walking and biking | Involved in 47% of the crashes that killed or seriously injured someone |
| Speed | 52% of those crashes happened on roads posted at 30 to 40 mph |
| Corridors flagged for full-length safety work | Avondale Road and 148th Avenue NE |
| Walking and biking crash cluster | Redmond Way between 160th Avenue NE and SR 520 |
| Severe sideswipes | Redmond Way and SR 202 between 161st and 185th Avenue NE |
The city’s 2025 annual report counted 16 crashes that killed or seriously injured someone in 2025, including one death. The city uses this data to plan safety fixes. Federal law generally keeps it out of injury lawsuits, so your case is built on the evidence from your own crash.
Find your situation
You were hurt in a crash
Many injury claims start with a crash. See our Redmond pages on car accidents, truck accidents, and motorcycle accidents. Rideshare crash? See Uber and Lyft accidents.
You were hit while walking
Redmond’s safety plan found that people walking and biking were involved in 47% of the city’s crashes that killed or seriously injured someone (2018 to 2022), with a cluster along Redmond Way between 160th Avenue NE and SR 520 (City of Redmond). Across King County, 60 people walking or rolling died in 2023 and 52 in 2024 (WTSC; 2024 preliminary).
Washington law requires drivers to stop for people in crosswalks, marked or not (RCW 46.61.235), and to use due care to avoid hitting anyone on foot (RCW 46.61.245). PIP on the car that hit you, or on your own household’s policy, can pay medical bills early (RCW 48.22.005). Read what to do after a pedestrian accident.
You were hit while riding a bike
Redmond has long called itself the “Bicycle Capital of the Northwest.” The 3.9-mile Redmond Central Connector links the East Lake Sammamish, Bear Creek, and Sammamish River trails and is part of the 42-mile Eastrail. The city reports that 57% of its planned low-stress bike network is complete (City of Redmond). More riders on mixed streets means more chances for a careless driver.
Drivers must give riders room when passing (RCW 46.61.110), and riders may treat stop signs as yield signs when it’s safe (RCW 46.61.190). PIP can cover a rider too, because the law treats anyone outside a motor vehicle as a pedestrian (RCW 48.22.005). See our Bellevue bicycle accident page.

You fell on someone else’s property
Property owners must keep their places reasonably safe, and what they owe you depends on why you were there. A store owes customers more than a homeowner owes a trespasser (Tincani v. Inland Empire Zoological Society). Usually you must show the owner created the hazard, knew about it, or should have found it.
When snow and ice hit, the City of Redmond asks residents and businesses to clear the sidewalk in front of their property (City of Redmond). Who is responsible for a fall on a sidewalk, a store floor, or an apartment stairway depends on who controlled that spot and what they knew.
See our Bellevue slip and fall page and deadlines for fall claims.
You lost someone
If a careless act caused a death, the family may bring a wrongful death claim. See our Redmond wrongful death page.
Rules that apply to every Redmond claim
| Rule | What it means | Law |
|---|---|---|
| Deadline | Most injury lawsuits must be filed within three years | RCW 4.16.080 |
| Shared fault | Your recovery is reduced by your share of fault, not erased | RCW 4.22.005 |
| Government claims | A claim form and a 60-day wait before suing a city, county, or transit agency | RCW 4.96.020 |
| PIP | Your own auto policy pays medical bills early after a crash | RCW 48.22.085 |
| UIM | Pays when the at-fault driver has too little insurance | RCW 48.22.030 |
Claims against a government have their own process. The City of Redmond’s Claims Division takes claims online or by mail. King County handles claims for county property and Metro buses through its Office of Risk Management Services, and Sound Transit takes light rail claims online, by email, or by mail. State law requires a 60-day wait after filing before a lawsuit (RCW 4.96.020).
If a Redmond case goes to court, it’s filed in King County Superior Court. The court’s local rule assigns an injury case to the area where the injury happened, and everything in King County north of I-90 falls in the Seattle case area (LCR 82). So Redmond cases are usually handled at the King County Courthouse in downtown Seattle.
What a claim can cover
Medical care now and later, lost wages and earning power, property damage, and help at home. It also covers pain, stress, scarring, and the activities you’ve lost. See our results and typical settlement ranges.
Serious injuries from Redmond are often treated at EvergreenHealth in Kirkland or Overlake in Bellevue, both Level III trauma centers. The most critical patients go to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, the region’s Level I center (state Department of Health).

Do you need a lawyer?
Not always. If no one was hurt, or your injury healed in a few days and the insurer is paying fairly, you may be able to handle it yourself. A lawyer usually makes sense when you needed real medical treatment, missed work, have lasting symptoms, or the insurer is delaying or blaming you. A free call can help you decide, and we’ll tell you honestly if you don’t need us.
Fees
No Win, No Fee. Our fee comes from the recovery. If there’s no recovery, you owe nothing, including case costs. More on how injury lawyers charge.
