What Renton’s crash data shows
Renton is writing a citywide safety plan, with adoption expected in early 2027 (City of Renton). In an August 2026 update, the city said it “has seen a steady increase in crashes that cause deaths or life-changing injuries,” and shared what its analysis found (City of Renton):
| Finding | Detail |
|---|---|
| Where serious crashes cluster | About two-thirds happen on 4.5% of Renton’s roads and at 1% of its intersections |
| Most common severe crash | T-bone (side-impact) crashes, 43% |
| A leading cause | Failure to yield, in about one in four severe crashes |
| People on foot | About 3% of crashes, but 25% of fatal or serious-injury crashes |
| Where pedestrians are hit | Half at intersections; 40% while in a marked crosswalk |
The city uses this analysis to plan safety work. Federal law generally keeps traffic-safety planning data out of injury lawsuits, so your own case is built on the evidence from your crash.
Who’s who in your Renton car accident claim
The police officer
On Renton’s city streets, the report usually comes from Renton Police. Out on I-405 or SR 167, it’s typically a trooper. The officer’s report is important, but it isn’t the final word. If it has mistakes, other evidence can correct them.
Your own insurance adjuster
Your insurer is on your side for PIP, which pays medical bills early regardless of fault (RCW 48.22.085). Basic PIP covers at least $10,000 in medical bills (RCW 48.22.095). Later, if the other driver’s coverage falls short, your adjuster also handles UIM (RCW 48.22.030). Even here, report the facts carefully.
The other driver’s adjuster
This person works for the company that will pay your claim, and their goal is to pay as little as possible. They may call quickly, sound friendly, and ask for a recorded statement. You don’t have to give one. Washington requires drivers to carry liability insurance (RCW 46.30.020), and that insurer pays your losses when the claim resolves.
Your doctors
Your medical records are the backbone of your claim. Tell every doctor exactly how you were hurt and every symptom you have. Keep your appointments. Gaps in care are one of the first things an adjuster points to.
The repair shop and rental company
The claim pays to fix your car, or its value if it’s totaled, plus a rental or other way to get around while you wait. Get your own estimate so you have a number to compare.
Your lawyer
Our job is to look out for you alone. We deal with every adjuster, gather the evidence, track your bills, and push for a fair result, in court if needed.

Renton roads and crash spots
- I-405, where WSDOT is widening the road and building express toll lanes between SR 167 in Renton and Bellevue. WSDOT calls it “one of the state’s worst commutes” and forecasts opening in summer 2027 (WSDOT).
- The I-405 and SR 167 interchange, where a flyover ramp opened in 2019 (WSDOT).
- Rainier Avenue, Sunset Boulevard, and Grady Way, which the city calls major corridors.
- SR 169 (Maple Valley Highway) and SR 900.
Work zones add risk: lane shifts, narrow shoulders, and sudden slowdowns. If a crash happened in a construction zone, we look at the signs, barriers, and traffic control as well as the drivers involved.
Hit-and-run in Renton
If the other driver fled, your UIM coverage may still pay. But Washington law requires a police report within 72 hours and proof beyond your own word, like a witness or video (RCW 48.22.030, subsection 8). Read about hit-and-run claims.
Seventy-two hours. That’s the deadline to report a hit-and-run to police and protect your UIM claim.
Buses, transit, and government vehicles
King County Metro buses serve Renton, and more transit is on the way. Sound Transit’s Stride S1 bus rapid transit line between Burien and Bellevue is expected in 2028, with Renton stations at the I-405 and NE 44th Street interchange and a new transit center (Sound Transit). Claims involving Metro go to the King County Office of Risk Management Services, and Sound Transit has its own claims process.
Government claims follow their own rules. A claim against the City of Renton goes to the City Clerk’s Claims Office at 1055 South Grady Way, by email or through the city’s online portal. The city takes up to 60 days to review it. State law requires that 60-day wait before a lawsuit against a local government (RCW 4.96.020).
Injuries after a car crash
Crashes cause neck and back sprains, disc injuries, concussions, fractures, and lasting anxiety. Pain can build over several days. See delayed neck pain, herniated discs, and brain injuries.
Renton has its own trauma center: Valley Medical Center, a Level III center for adults. The most severe injuries go to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, the region’s Level I center (state Department of Health).

Five numbers worth knowing
| Number | Why it matters | Law |
|---|---|---|
| 72 hours | Time to report a hit-and-run to police to protect a UIM claim | RCW 48.22.030 |
| $10,000 | The least basic PIP pays toward your medical bills | RCW 48.22.095 |
| 60 days | The wait after filing a claim against a city, county, or transit agency | RCW 4.96.020 |
| 3 years | The usual deadline to file a lawsuit | RCW 4.16.080 |
| 0 | What you owe us if we don’t win, fees and costs included | Our fee agreement |
Hurt while driving for work
If you were on the clock when the crash happened, L&I may pay part of your medical bills and lost wages. When another driver caused the crash, you can also bring a claim against that driver (RCW 51.24.030). That second claim can pay for pain and other losses L&I doesn’t. Because L&I may be repaid from it, the two need to be handled together.
Passengers and rideshare trips
Passengers are rarely at fault, which often makes their claims simpler. A passenger may claim against either driver, or both. In an Uber or Lyft, the coverage depends on whether the driver had a rider or was waiting for one. See our rideshare accident page.

Shared fault
How shared fault works
Court and deadlines
King County Superior Court splits the county into two case areas. An injury case goes to the area where the injury happened, and Renton, south of I-90, is in the Kent case area (LCR 82). So a Renton case is usually heard at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent, not in downtown Seattle.
Most car crash lawsuits must be filed within three years (RCW 4.16.080). Claims against a city, county, or transit agency need a claim form and a 60-day wait first (RCW 4.96.020).
What a Renton car accident claim may be worth
We look at how badly you were hurt, the treatment you needed, the work you missed, how clear the other driver’s fault is, and how much coverage exists. Among Rich’s car crash cases: a brain injury that brought a $1.55 million verdict, and a shoulder injury a jury valued at $900,000. Past results don’t guarantee yours.
